Two learning environments, based on different media that pose different activity demands on learners, provide the starting point of the study reported in this paper. While teaching the very same content, the first learning environment was realized as an interactive application, the second one was designed as a non-interactive teaching video. Both variants taught basic facts about the Internet and were targeted at nine to eleven year old elementary school pupils. To evaluate the learning environments′ effectiveness in teaching the respective content, a questionnaire was developed to elicit the retention and transfer knowledge that participants acquired when working with the environments. The results of the study strongly emphasize the importance of interactivity for successful learning.
