While most people easily learn how to use a Web browser, navigation in the World Wide Web continues to be challenging even for experienced users. One reason lies in the variety of links and link targets, and the resulting intransparency: the effect of a click on a link is often surprising to the user. The HyperScout project investigates if navigation can be supported by providing preview information about the links and their targets to the user. This paper presents the concepts developed for selecting and visualizing preview information, and a user study with a prototype derived from these concepts. The results of the user study hint at which information can help users select useful links and how it can be appropriately visualized.
