Hardware-/Software Trade-Offs in Digital Communication Systems with Special Emphasis on Channel-Coding

Today´s information society demands access to huge amounts of data anywhere and at any time. In digital communications bandwidth and transmission power are critical resources. Thus advanced communication standards have to rely on sophisticated error correction schemes. Advanced channel coding techniques like Turbo-Codes impose many implementation challenges. In this paper we discuss the design space of such algorithms and present different software and hardware implementations.
