Telephony represents only a tiny fraction of the mobile communication market of tomorrow. In the future, mobile data communication will be the name of the game. Fax, e-Mail, video and Internet features are all set to achieve equal status with voice and open up a world of new services and business opportunities. The number of frequencies on offer is going to increase strongly for both cellular (GSM) and cordless (e.g. DECT) phones. As a result, we are going to see transmission bandwidths increase dramatically, with fixed-line network and mobile systems becoming integrated into third generation (UMTS) systems. In fact, the mobile radio market will grow so fast that there are likely to be as many as 800 million subscribers by the year 2003.
