New interaction concepts that provide new levels of usability by going beyond the traditional point-and-click metaphors are being investigated world-wide. In this paper, we present some of the current research approaches of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research in this area. We are investigating non-symbolic and continuous interaction paradigms and discuss their implications on usability research. Based on concrete projects, new challenges to usability research are presented, new solutions for usability problems are explained and new tools and frameworks for the support of the usability engineering are outlined.
