Fieldbus Systems – History, Properties, and Trends

Fieldbus systems form the spine of modern automation. This article sketches their evolution from simple interfaces to complex communication structures and outlines specific properties. An overview of current and future developments shows that the evolution of fieldbus systems continues even after the final adoption of an international fieldbus standard. Many topics presented here are treated in more detail in other articles of this issue.
