Mobile Ad hoc networks (MANET) enable data communication in an infrastructure-less manner and hence support several novel applications. The special properties of MANETs, such as the need for self-organization, the highly dynamic network topology, and the bandwidth and energy constraints, result in new requirements on system architecture and network protocols. An essential, but not yet solved problem in the area of MANET research is the efficient and reliable self-configuration of MANETs, also called autoconfiguration. The most important configuration parameter of IP is a unique IP address of the network interface. This article provides an overview of the thesis “IP-Autokonfiguration in mobilen Ad-hoc-Netzwerken”, which analyses different approaches and proposes a very efficient and reliable solution for distributed and automatic IP address allocation in MANETs.
