The notion knowledge society stresses the enormous importance of creating, using, and maintaining knowledge structures. Today, it is widely accepted that to a large extent knowledge is socially embedded. This is particularly true for the structuring of knowledge. In addition to a lexicographical structuring by keywords or metadata, the semantic structuring is of eminent relevance in processes of net-based knowledge organization. This article begins with an overview of methods for the spatial structuring of knowledge. In a second step, technical aspects are discussed for manipulating spatial structures of co-operative virtual knowledge spaces, the key features being the specific form of persistence, the support of synchronous as well as asynchronous work processes and awareness mechanisms. Also, the transitions between individual and co-operative phases and opportunities for self-organization are of high relevance. With these techniques, users may create knowledge representations and structure processes of discussion. Both ways together with their didactical implications will be discussed considering practical examples from tertiary education.
