This paper gives an overview of the special research project 501, titled "Development of large systems with generic methods". It is founded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The research project is based on an experimental approach where research results of individual subprojects are empirically examined by controlled experiments and prototype application developments.
