The development of digital picture coding: MPEG-4 and beyond

This paper gives an overview about the state of the art in MPEG-4 video coding and some examples of interactive services using the content based functionalities of this standard are presented. Furthermore some tendencies in image compression and possible ways of evolution are discussed.
