In this contribution we give a short survey about some actual trends in the area of dependability and fault tolerance of computing systems. First, in the introduction the different fault sources and the redundancy approaches for dealing with them, are characterized. Then new methods for the verification and validation of software, including its reliability assessment, are described. Subsequently, we discuss problems of testability and fault tolerance in future hardware components. Finally, some solution concepts at the level of integrated computing systems are exhibited.
