The development of video coding over 40 years is reviewed along its main mile stones. It resulted in the first worldwide standards for digital video coding. The developed standards enabled the introduction of digital television, of the DVD, and of multimedia communications via the internet. By digital video coding the data rate of a PCM video signal in ITU 601-format can be reduced from 166 Mbit/s to about 4 Mbit/s. Finally new coding tools going to be standardized are explained which allow a further reduction of the data rate down to 2 Mbit$s and below.
