Control applications have been successfully implemented in specific environments exploiting tailored communication systems, characterized as control networks or fieldbuses. In order to support more global applications, these networks have to be spatially expanded. A practical way is to use a global communications infrastructure such as the Internet. Depending on the application two approaches are possible: a router or a gateway. Any method has to consider the fundamentally different properties of IP networks compared to control networks, such as transit delay, delay variance and packet order. A proposed architecture can take care of this by either rejecting non-conforming packets or rely on certain QoS agreements. Existing implementations of LonWorks/IP routers and gateways are being deployed and face a constantly growing market.
