Computer Graphics Research Contributing to the Development of Truly ‘Generalized Documents’

This paper presents the research challenges and the contributions of four projects addressing the three main approaches to integrate 3D graphics into digital documents: the polygon-based approach, where surfaces of geometric objects are approximated by planar polygons, the semantic-based approach, where the creation processes of individual objects are kept accessible for the various visualization tasks through techniques known as generative modeling, and the lightfield approach, which allows the display of 3D objects based on a set of 2D images only, i.e., without a 3D model available to the rendering system.
