In this article, we present a novel platform for realizing computer augmented tabletop games called STARS. The aim of STARS is to facilitate the development of hybrid board games that combine the playful interaction between humans with the sensible use of information technology. We describe both the hardware and software platform as well as the associated interaction design. First experiences with the platform are presented together with games that are built on top of the STARS platform. This article is a revised and augmented version of the authors′ contribution to the Mensch und Computer 2003 conference. The original article gained the first place of the Best Paper Award at the conference.
