Mobile devices such as personal digital assistants are increasingly spreading and open up multifarious new application areas. As these devices differ in their size and performance as well as their application environments from personal computers, existing paradigms and concepts for the design of user interfaces have to be reconsidered and new paradigms and concepts have to be introduced. In this paper characteristics and challenges of mobile devices are analysed from a technical and a users′ point of view, requirements for the design of hardware and software are specified and an evaluation of mobile devices is carried out.
