An Application of Knowledge Discovery in Databases in eLearning

This paper deals with the development of an assistance system for users of electronic teaching/learning material (eTLM). Currently, we examine the field of simulator-based training of pilots as an example application.
In this context, we focus problems caused by the possible isolation of users of eTLM. Under keywords like tutorial systems, virtual communities, and learning scenarios a wide range of different ap-proaches to handle this problem are discussed. Within our work, in particular, tutorial tasks and tasks to build/establish virtual groups of learners are delegated to special software components (agents) which form the assistance system. In the past, we developed a data-driven approach to synthesize a foundation for the behavior of these agents. This approach is essentially founded on methods from the field of knowledge discovery in databases (KDD). Results regarding this part of our work, which includes i.e. special tools for KDD and the outcome of their practical application, are exten-sively discussed in this paper.
