Ambient Intelligence: Basic Elements and Insights

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, computer applications, computing milieux, Ambient Intelligence

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is about smart everyday technology that makes sense. The concept refers to electronic environments that are sensitive and responsive to the presence of people. The paradigm relates to a vision on digital systems for the years 2010–2020 which was developed in the late nineties of the past century, and which has become quite influential worldwide in the development of new concepts for information processing. The novel and disruptive element of the vision is that it combines in a unique way elements from multi-disciplinary fields such as electrical engineering, computer science, industrial design, user interfaces, and cognitive sciences into highly integrated systems by a user-centered design approach.
