Though the X-ray diffraction consequences due to size effect in disordered crystalline solid solutions are well known and discussed in texts (Warren, 1969; Weiss, 1966), most of the reported work is based on very simple crystal structures such as f.c.c. alloys and alkali halides. An X-ray diffraction study on the crystalline solid solution Na(CI03)0.7(BrO3)0.3, a system in which the atoms lie in general positions, is reported here. Details ofthe experimental work and the refinement ofthe structure to an R value of 0.057 are discussed. The results indicate that the size effect distortion is less appreciable in the halate system compared to the reported work on crystalline solid solutions of simple structures. However, a small over-all static shift for the halogen atom alone is observed in the present work.
