Knowledge of the molecular assemblies in mesomorphic phases is essential for a proper understanding of the bulk physical properties of liquid crystals such as optical anisotropy, diamagnetic anisotropy etc. It is now well established that the molecular conformation of the crystalline state predetermines the molecular organisation in the liquid crystalline phases. It is also, believed that the stabilization of the mesophases and hence the microvariations of the physical properties depend strongly on the long side chains and are essentially independent ofthe central rigid lattice. A correlated study of physical properties and molecular structure enables us to tailor the molecules to suit our requirements. In view of this we have taken up the erystallographic studies of nematogenic homologous series trans-4-propyl cyclohexyl-4-(trans-4-alkyl cyclohexyl) benzoate containing cyclohexane groups in the rigid core. In the present paper we communicate the crystallographic data for the crystals of the nematic liquid crystalline materials trans-4-propyl cyclohexyl-4-(trans-4-ethyl cyclohexyl) benzoate (I) and trans-4-propyl cyclohexyl-4-(trans-4-propyl cyclohexyl) benzoate (II).
