Silver-fluorine cluster compounds AgnFm(0 ≤ m ≤ n, n ≥ 2) were produced by evaporation of silver into an argon atmosphere enriched with SF6 . The mass spectra of the cations, resulting from the subsequent electron impact ionization, reflect the relative stabilities of the various species. It turns out that up to rather high degree of fluorination these are determined by the available number of Ag valence electrons (if it is assumed that each F atom "consumes" one of these electrons). This suggests the existence of a metallic core, surrounded by negatively charged ligands, in analogy to the properties of crystalline Ag2F.
