Improvement in radiochemical and γ-counting procedures for the determination of 234Th in seawater

Procedures have been improved for the measurement of dissolved 234Th in seawater on 20-l volume samples, using a single γ counting. The shortened 234Th protocol can be conducted at sea for radiochemical purification. Subsequent low-level gamma counting is done at the laboratory for the determination of the 229Th yield tracer, 234Th, and, depending of its activity, of 228Th. It offers an easy and fast method for 234Th analyses. This new approach avoids time-consuming extraction and plating procedures used previously and reduces counting errors associated with multiple counting sessions.
