Hydrophobic Interactions in Solution: A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Approach

The self-association behaviour of relatively small hydrophobic organic components in aqueous mixtures has been investigated by the application of an NMR technique. The association A22 parameter, which is essentially obtained from experimental intermolecular dipole-dipole relaxation data of 1H nuclei and from NMR measurements of the self-diffusion coefficients of the organic solvents, has been determined. The composition dependence of the A22 parameter allowed to point out the association behaviour of the organic components. Moreover, the effect of electrolytes and non electrolytes and of the temperature on the self-associating properties of the organic molecules has been studied.
