In mixed crystals of the isomorphous formate dihydrates of Mg, Cd, COIl, NiIl, CUll, Fell and MnII one cation species may preponderantly occupy one of the two distinct metal sites (Wagner et al. 1966; March et aI., 1973; Ogata et al., 1977 a, b). The extent of this seems to be related to magnetic (e.g. Wagner et al., 1966; Burlet et al., 1975) and to structural properties (March et aI., 1973; Ogata et aI., 1977a, b). The present investigation was undertaken to provide more accurate structural information than reported so far (Osaki et aI., 1964; Kay et aI., 1968) for the pure Mn salt.
